The East-West metro in Kolkata is under construction at present. On the eastern side it culminates at the Salt Lake, and another wing may come up to terminate at the international airport. The earlier plan was to terminate it at Ramrajatala on the western side. But due to the massive compensation amount to be shelled out, it was shifted to Dasnagar. But, once again, owing to financial crunch, the CCEA gave its nod only up to Howrah station, followed by a ratification of extension of one more station, up to Howrah Maidan. What I want to showcase is that if the metro can me extended to from Howrah station to the existing facility at the Shalimar station. Unused tracks has been lying around the entire stretch, earlier used by goods train. Thus the railways have to acquire absolutely no land for the project, and the metro can run on elevated or ground level tracks. Though this will increase the budget by a few hundred crores, it will bring into limelight the dying facility of the Shalimar station, mainly plagued by the communication hurdle. Once the station gets the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) based passenger dispersal system, it can share the passenger load of Howrah station which is already reeling under tremendous pressure. Also it can provide an optional termination point for several long distance trains during heavy rains when an inundated Tikiapara carshed holds up rail traffic for hours, sending running schedules haywire. And as the unused tracks run along the Foreshore road there will be no need to build communication roads for intermediate stations between Howrah Station and Shalimar station.

I would like to give a suggestion on east- west metro, that in future this project should be extended upto alampur via andul road, connecting Botanical garden.that will be a great relief to the comuters using anudul road, who faces a grate challenge to attend office in right time, as there is only few cars towards central kolkata.

I think there should be regular metro feeder bus service running at times to help people reach from inside area to nearest metro station like what is there in Bangalore. eg lets say for the existing metro service , a bus service from Airport to Dum dum lets say. the bus should have good basic amenities so that people use their private transport less and the public transport more ensuring lesser traffic snarls and pollution.
